Are There Activities Or Sports For Toddlers?- Knoxville TN

Looking for things to do with your elementary ages and older children doesn’t pose the same problems as looking for activities or sports for toddlers and preschool ages. Most classes and teams are designed for teens or adults then augmented for younger kids. This is not a good fit for toddlers or preschoolers.

Karate is one of the best activities and sports for toddlers or preschoolers. There are other things to do like soccer, dance, and gymnastics for younger kids. But Karate directly addresses toddler milestones, character development, and my classes center on fun, fit, and functional.

Don’t get me wrong. I actually promote doing Karate along with other activities as long as the other coaches or teachers don’t try to monopolize your family’s time. I advocate for a minimum of one class per week whereas other martial arts instructors or sports coaches require 2 or even 3 or more days per week.

Although I know martial arts to be the best option for toddlers, I admit it is not the only one. I am also able to be more honest with my expectations due to the fact that Karate is a lifelong journey. Other activities and sports have limited participation due to ages and seasons.

What Are Toddlers Activities In Knoxville TN?

Activities for toddlers can be categorized into several groups that will help parents know what they are looking for. There are programs that are artistic in nature like art, music, and languages. There are athletic activities like sports, and then there are lifelong skills like language learning and Karate.

In Knoxville, an activity like Karate for toddlers is not only a fun skill to learn, it affects their whole lives. Team sports such as soccer are doable for toddlers, and artistic expressions like dance and gymnastics can work. But to get virtue based, functional skills toddlers need martial arts.

At Master Booe’s Karate Kidz, I suggest parents bring their children once per week to begin and as a base going forward. This allows the little ninjas to do other sports and activities. You will find that this is not only unique in Knoxville, but in most areas.

Nearly all Karate instructors insist on 2 or more attendances per week in order to justify their higher price structures. You will find soccer coaches doing the same thing in order to get enough time in before the next game or before the season ends. Karate is a lifelong pursuit, and this is not necessary.

What Are Some Fun Toddler Activities?

For 2 and 3 year olds, attention spans are a real issue. If we want to keep them engaged enough to learn and participate, their ability to focus has to be central to any activity. For toddlers to find something fun, they have to feel a sense of accomplishment and exploration. What can give them this?

Karate that is specifically designed and taught for young children is a very effective and fun activity for toddlers. This is possible due to the experience of the instructor leading them safely and not allowing young children with unformed character free reign.

Other fun activities for toddlers besides Karate include hiking with parents in parks or on short trails, learning to swim with qualified instructors, age appropriate art instruction, or learning simple musical instruments. All of these have one thing in common. They need a teacher with years of experience.

How Do You Entertain A Toddler In Knoxville?

Entertainment is not necessarily the same as other activities. It involves excitement and fun, but not necessarily direct skill development. How can you find entertainment in Knoxville for toddlers that is appropriate and safe for their small minds and bodies?

Entertaining a toddler through Karate birthday parties, back to school bashes, martial arts parents night outs, and kids movie nights at Master Booe’s Karate Kidz studio is highly successful. These give a child the boundaries and supervision he needs and the relaxed fun environment she craves.

In a study done at the University of Amsterdam, researchers found that toddlers pay the most attention to things that assure them of the world around them that they already perceive. They want affirmation and a sense of normalcy.

This comes in the form of digitally delivered recognizable input or through adult supervised activities designed to show them how to be. To entertain a toddler there needs to be adult supervised, age appropriate, and virtue based activities lead by trusted and experienced adults.

At Master Booe’s Karate Kidz, I am the only instructor and have 30 years of experience teaching kids as young as 2 years old. With my light hearted approach, virtue based curriculum, and safe age appropriate environment, your toddlers with have the times of their lives.

What activities should a 2 or 3 year old be doing?

If normalcy to a toddler equals fun and entertainment along with safety and affirmation, what can deliver that to a 2 or 3 year old mind? What will they find fun while their parents know has lasting educational and formative value?

There are several activities toddlers should be doing and most of them include direct parental supervision or leadership from a trusted adult. Activities like Karate, dance, music, gymnastics, and the right digital media in moderation are good. Parent led walks, games, and crafts are also great.

Though if it is not simply fun and entertainment that you as a parent are after, then the choices narrow a bit. Some activities are more meaningful, lasting, or beneficial than others. Languages and the martial arts are two of the more practical avenues that also deliver on accomplishment and a beauty of their own.

For a mix of fun, entertainment, practicality, character development, and physical fitness, Karate is at the top of the list. At my Karate School in West Knoxville, I have a motto that encompasses all of this. My classes are virtue based and purposefully fun, fit, and functional.

Are There Indoor Activities For Toddlers?

Outside exploration and time for 2 to 4 year olds is important, but sometimes it can be impractical. This can be because of weather, other family members that must come along, or a host of other reasons. So what are indoor activities for toddlers in Knoxville?

Karate is a primary indoor activity for both the kids taking the classes and family watching. There are some sports like soccer that can be played on indoor fields, but those are hard to come by. Gymnastics is another mainly indoor activity. There are indoor play areas both free and fee based.

At my Karate school we have taken great pains to make the waiting area for parents as inviting as possible. This is definitely not the case in the bleacher, folding chair, or bench areas most kids sports locations have. It is not just the little Karate kidz that need the right environment for indoor activities.

This is the perfect area for indoor activities for little ones with daily sanitized mats and floors for bare feet to scamper on. The play, running, and tumbling is always supervised and boundaries are always delineated. As far as fun things to do indoors, Karate is as good as it gets.

And Master Booe’s Karate Kidz is leaps and bounds above the rest with the facilities, instruction, and attention to detail.

What Are Sports For Toddlers In Knoxville?

Sports and toddlers don’t actually match that well. There are many parts of competition, matches, or games that don’t fit well with the underdeveloped mind that toddlers have. Yet, training for competition later can be a way to develop skills and conditioning for when they are able to handle it.

With martial arts, competition is not normally the center of the system kidz learn. The skills can be learned and perfected without ever entering any type of competition. This is not true with most other sports. They are based on games and not life skills.

Sports for toddlers should consist of skills development and not actual competition. Games involve losing, failing, and learning from mistakes. These are valuable tools for older children through adulthood, but not well received in the toddler stages.

Some sports to try to build skills in for toddlers besides Karate could be:

  • Soccer
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Baseball (Tee Ball)

There are also some sports that are simply too ‘big’ for these little guys due to their size and maturity level:

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Cycling
  • Climbing
