Is There Karate For Toddlers In Knoxville TN?

With so few activity options for toddlers for parents to consider, it is no wonder martial arts for toddlers would come to mind. With all of the amazing benefits of arts like Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, and Kali they would be excellent choices if toddlers could participate. So, is Karate an options of toddlers in Knoxville?

Toddler Karate classes are definitely an option in Knoxville, though there are few schools that have the experience to teach children as young as 2 or 3 years old. With classes for toddlers ages 2 and up, Master Booe’s Karate Kidz is the best place in Knoxville for toddler martial arts.

I am Master Booe, and in my over 30 years of experience teaching Karate to children as young as two years old, I have learned that if it is done well, most 2 year olds and nearly all 3 year olds and up can thrive in the martial arts. Next, I will answer some of the questions about toddlers I have been asked by parents.

Can Toddlers Even Do Karate?

If Karate is a skill that takes years for even adults to master, then how can a 2 to 4 year old get anything out of it? Is this something they should even try?

Toddlers can do Karate. Kids as young as 2 years old can not only participate in martial arts classes, they can gain some of the same benefits from its study as older kids and adults. They can learn balance, coordination, and self control. Much of it aligns with their milestone goals.

According to a study done by researchers from York University, Toronto, ON, Canada, sport activity, and specifically organized sports with direct adult supervision, has been shown in studies to benefit young children in this age range in three main ways:

  • enhanced social skills
  • pro-social behaviours
  • self-regulation

Martial arts for toddler aged children not only addresses all of these areas, but many others in the range of early childhood development. For those not familiar with these ‘milestones’ as they are called, The CDC has a very helpful set of pages on their website that list the major ones by age.

The links to those pages are here for two year olds, here for three year olds, and here for four year olds. If you look through them you will notice many of the things listed will get directly addressed through instruction in the martial arts.

In Knoxville, there is another issue that has to be addressed. There are no martial arts schools that accept preschool children at 2 years old, save one. There are very few that allow three year olds, and most that allow 4 year olds are not focusing on them and their needs.

Most Karate or martial arts schools in the Knoxville and surrounding areas focus more on afterschool programs, older children, and adults.

I have a school in Knoxville that is only for children and specifically focused on the younger ages. I start kidz at age 2 and allow students through age 12. Teen siblings are welcome in their own classes if training for rank. The focus of my school is on younger ones rather than adults.

If you would like to set up a free class for your little Karate Kidz, I would be happy to give you a free class or two to show you what I can do for your family.

What Is The Best Martial Art For A Toddler Girl?

Now that we have established that martial arts for preschoolers is a good option for development and activity, what about the inherent differences between girls and boys. What are the considerations for young girls when it comes to martial arts?

For toddler girls a blended martial art system is the best option. The BASICS of grappling (Judo/Jiu Jitus), striking (Karate/TaeKwonDo), and weapons (Kali/Kendo) is optimal to keep the techniques attainable. In Knoxville, Master Booe’s Karate Kids is the real choice.

Going beyond the basics for preschool aged kids trying to learn Karate, Judo, or Kali skills, can be a bit much to handle. For girls specifically, to get the success of so many girls attending my classes it is important to keep the environment and curriculum basic, light, and fun.

My motto is Fun, Fit, And Functional.

Girls tend to grow a bit faster and learn a bit quicker than boys at earlier ages. This evens out later on, but when we are looking at ages 2 to 4 years old, girls are perfectly suited for a well organized, safe, and age appropriate Karate class.

In my classes, for both boys and girls I blend the basics of Judo/Jiu Jitsu with falling and balance techniques, Karate/TaeKwonDo with quick hand motions and developed kicks, and Kali/Kendo because of the hand-eye coordination and reflex development swinging foam swords and sticks can bring.

To come in and let your tiny treasures try out a class, contact me and I can show you how my studio is the best option for your family.

What Age Should A Boy Start Karate?

After discussing a bit about girls and what to expect with young ones taking martial arts classes, we should now turn our focus on the little balls of energy that boys can to be. Is it better to start them younger or should they be allowed to grow a bit more?

Boys should start Karate classes early with 2 years old being a good option for the majority of them. With the right instructor, styles, and environment, toddler boys can gain tons of benefits from martial arts classes. Boys in the preschool age group can have lots of fun and learn valuable skills.

The problem parents run into again in Knoxville, Farragut, and other nearby neighborhoods is the lack of not only schools that accept 2 and 3 year olds, but a general lack of experience when it comes to teaching that age group.

Teaching boys at the preschool age is not something anyone just knows how to do. It takes tons of time, training, and life experience.

Just like with little girls, boys will need the basics curated for them from styles in the three main categories of the martial arts.

  • Striking – blocking, kicking, punching, jumping etc.
  • Grappling – wrestling, takedowns, falling techniques, and hold-downs
  • Weapons – single and double handed swords, sticks, etc that build reflexes, focus, and dexterity.

With my mix of Karate/Taekwondo, Judo/Jiu Jitsu, and foam based Kali/Kendo hidden in 45 minutes of pure fun, most 2 year old boys and nearly all 3 year old boys and up will excel.

For you to get a free class and see how I deal with this very fun age group, contact me and we can set it up at your earliest convenience. I even offer no contracts and free uniforms with your first term signup.

Can Most Kids Start Karate At 3 Years Old?

As I alluded to before, there are limitations children at this age will have. It is true, there is a small fraction of 2 year olds that simply need a little more time to grow. Yet, is that true for 3 year olds?

Practically all 3 year olds are able to start karate classes whenever their parents see fit to bring them. Both boys and girls tend to thrive in a proper martial arts class with a qualified and experienced instructor. The social, mental, and physical benefits give them and advantage in life.

I found through the decades of teaching young children that 3 year olds would rarely be unable to learn and enjoy from my classes. If you have an experienced kids instructor, used to teaching not only children, but young children, a 3 year old is a sure bet in a martial arts class.

As with 2 year olds, a mix of all three major categories of marital arts, focusing on the basics, and the right teaching techniques can make a martial arts class the highlight of a 3 year old’s week. This can also be said for parents and grandparents watching if the instructor knows how to run the class properly.

If you are still wondering about your little one, and you live in the Knoxville area, contact me and we will set up a free class so you can see for yourself. And don’t be concerned about long term agreements or pushy sales tactics. I don’t offer contracts, high prices, or hidden fees, honest.

How Much Is Karate For 4 Year Old And Younger Kids?

One of the major concerns for parents of toddlers preparing to start Karate classes in the Knoxville region is the costs associated, and rightfully so. Some pricing structures that could be legitimate for adults, really should not be used when dealing with younger children.

So how much is Karate for 4 year olds and younger and how is payment structures in most schools in Knoxville?

Karate classes for a 4 year old at Master Booe’s Karate Kidz is $99 for 9 classes and you can use them as fast or as slow as you want. Other Karate, Taekwondo, or Jiu Jitsu schools require long term contracts, multiple class times per week minimums, and over $100 per month on average.

This is not to mention the hidden required gear fees and premium clubs, uniforms, and other fees. For a 4 year old child in many studios, the costs can reach upwards of $175 to $ 200 per month.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There are some decent instructors and beautifully set up schools in the area that have large facilities and big groups of instructors. This overhead has to be covered for them to make a living and you are paying to keep the staff and studios available.

I am not saying that there are not legitimate reasons for some of these costs, but for children a smaller dojo space, smaller ‘team’ of instructors, and a more personal yet upscale atmosphere is important. This also comes at a more affordable price.

The average price a parent pays at Master Booe’s Karate Kidz is around $50 per month. I allow progression through belt ranks with only one class per week and strongly advise against attending more than two per week.

To let your toddler try out a class or two, contact me to set up a free one now. Once you have decided to continue there is a FREE uniform included with your first 9 class term signup. $99 for 9 classes and a FREE uniform is extremely affordable, especially if you choose to attend once per week.

The way to get started is simple. Contact me and set up your first free class today.
