Questions And Answers About Karate Classes

As promised, here are some of those answers to the most common parent questions…

At my Karate Kidz dojo, kidz can start as young as 2 years old. This is not to say that every 2 year old can do the class, but with my deliberate teaching style most can as well as all 3 year olds and above. Other Karate shcools in Knoxville are normally run like the rest of the country (4yrs old and up). At these other schools, the times are set at around one hour and even longer for teens and adults. This is not always the best option, especially for younger children. At Master Booe’s Karate Kidz, classes are specifically designed for children and there is no split focus with time and resources devoted to adults. The classes are 45 minutes and follow studies done on human attention spans and learning cycles. I have taught thousands of kidz in public schools, private schools, and charter schools around the world. In collaboration with teachers and administrators I have developed a system for getting the most out of these young ones that few other instructors in the world can match. When others can barely handle a few 4 year olds, I can have a class full of 2 and 3 year olds hanging on my every word.

Karate class prices in Knoxville vary greatly from school to school. Most all Karate studios charge by the month for either a set number of classes or unlimited visits per week. There are also contracts or agreements binding you and more importantly your children to paying for long amounts of time. At my Karate dojo, children are never held to contracts, you can choose how often and when they come, and the prices are better than the national average. For one time per week, martial arts classes at Master Booe’s Karate Kidz are $49 per month and $99 per month for two times per week. You can discontinue at any time. I am certain you will be happy with the classes and will want to continue. I see no need in holding anyone to contracts. The responsibility is on me to deliver the best service.

Karate classes in Knoxville usually are meant for teens and adults and simply augmented to suit children of younger ages. There are even martial arts schools in the area that teach children to dislocate joints and perform strangle holds. At my studio we teach Karate as self defense and not fighting. We use the ‘gentle art’ of Judo for grappling that doesn’t allow children to do limb breaking or choke holds. I teach striking through Karate, Taekwondo, and boxing to keep threats away and to get away. A child’s moral compass should not be relied upon not to use inappropriate techniques taught to them. They should be taught how to stop bullies, get away from unwanted attention of strange adults, and how to deal with unfamiliar animals. This takes a dedicated child focus in the Karate classes and a school environment focused on their needs alone. Simply augmenting an adult program leads to major problems.

There are no adult classes at my Karate school, only kids classes are on the schedule. I do family classes at special times where teen siblings can train and others where parents can train with their kidz. Yet, all classes are geared toward children.

I am the only instructor of my classes. I have over 30 years of experience teaching children. I do not hire teens or college students to teach your child.

Many Karate schools push for more and more class attendances, the longer you are with them. This ensures that more money comes in due to gear sales, special uniform sales, workshops, seminars, and the list goes on. This is not done with your child in mind, but the bottom line. At my Karate Kidz dojo, classes are there to serve your family. I make the classes fun and exciting, the children see improvement, and the family atmosphere brings everyone back. There is no need to require more and more attendance to get you ‘plugged into the school culture’. You will want to connect on your own. All that is to say, one time per week is plenty for most kidz and two times per week is the max allowed.

There is a free uniform waiting for your little Karate Kid when you sign up for your first term. I bring all gear and training equipment to each class, so you can borrow anything needed. You are more than welcome to buy things like t-shirts, gloves, etc. so your child doesn’t have to share, but it is never required.
